Greetings and welcome to the Church of Goldblum!

This board's purpose is to promote the search for truth through all mediums, including philosophy, religion, politics, and the arts. To this end, embedding and attachments are enabled.

Goldblumism is a Panentheistic religion whose core practices include meditation, cultivation of the mind and body, and exploration.

Goldblumism holds that the goals of life are:

1) Creative achievement and progress. Adherents must continually strive to achieve and create great works, whether in the arts, business/profession, sports, philosophy, science, medicine or any other field.

2) Meaningful relationships. This means connecting with people who add value to your life. It also means building a family and contributing to a community.

3) Novel experiences. This means adventure. It also means cultivating one's appreciation of art and culture.

I think visibility will likely be an issue, but I'll keep updating this board with relevant ideas and discussions.

The Church of Goldblum has a series of saints. This thread is about them. Saints are people who have accomplished inspiring things. In doing so, they reveal truths about reality and our relationship to it.

While Goldblumism is not pagan, there is a pagan practice that holds much value. In polytheistic religions ranging from Hinduism to Voudoun, people focus on a god/deity who embodies a trait they wish to exhibit themselves. In some of these religions, they believe the spirit of that god possesses them. Speaking in practical terms, using these figures as role models allows us to learn to adopt their qualities, and make them part of ourselves. People often assume you must be a certain way inside for it to manifest in our actions, but the truth is it can also work the opposite way, by acting in a certain way, and letting it become part of you from the outside in. Think of it like method acting/the Stanislavski method.

"Act like the person you want to be."

The "Law of Attraction" promoted by new age nonsense like The Secret has been rightly criticized for its wishful thinking. Just thinking about something a lot isn't going to make it happen. ACTION is the key. You can't just sit around wishing for something. The wishing itself doesn't actually do anything, and believing in some supernatural result is not only stupid, but dangerous. There are no "vibrations." That shit's all nonsense.

HOWEVER, there is a very useful idea within it: namely, that thinking about things only works in the positive sense. You can't think about a negative, and if you do, you'll get exactly what you don't want. The most obvious and cliché example of this is if I say "don't think about an elephant with polka dots," you're going to immediately picture an elephant with polka dots in your head.

Why is this important? Because it means that rather than focusing on how bad failing at something will be, you should focus on the alternative - why you don't want to fail, and how good succeeding will be. Don't focus on how miserable you'll be if you indulge in an addiction, for example. Rather, think about all the amazing stuff you'll be able to do if you kick that addiction, and what it would hold you back from. Don't focus on how miserable you'll be at your job. Focus on how happy you'll be at a different job you're trying for, and let that motivate you.

I'm gonna have to say Thor: Ragnarok but close runners up would be The Fly, Jurassic Park and The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai: Across the 8th Dimension.

On your selections, The Fly is a fantastic movie. I loved Buckaroo Bonzai as a kid, but I haven't watched it since then (it's one of my father's favorite movies). I'll have to go back and watch it again.

One thing I think worth highlighting is his work with Wes Anderson, particularly The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Isle of Dogs.

I have not yet seen his latest film, The Mountain, but I look forward to it.
